Metformin (again!)

Postby Efaitch » Tue Jul 20, 2010 1:47 pm

My postprandial Reading after breakfast this morning was 8.4 (I had muesli as bit still not well and didn't have time to cook). By lunchtime, after a cup if tea, I was having a hypo (3.6 and going down I felt).

When I was taking insulin when pregnant, I had the same kind of delay. My postprandial readings were still elevated, but I hypo'd within the next hour or two - even if I had a snack.

My antenatal/diabetic consultants were adamant that the insulin (novorapid) that I was using only acted very short term, but in each case, my BG levels tell me differently.

It's consistent too. It's not an isolated incident.

Anyone else experienced this? Or, have an explanation as to why it happens? Answers on a postcard please :) .

Hi Fiona,

I'm a non-insulin dependent Type 2 and the results that you have referred to are quite typical in my case. Occasionally, I go even lower - as low as 3.2 and once as low as 2.9. Personally, I consider that to be quite OK. However, I don't suffer any hypo' symptoms whatsoever and never have that I am aware of.

My GP's just cut back on my metformin tablets from 2000mg per day to 1000mg per day and one of the things that I'll be watching for is to see if that reduces the incidence of readings below 4.

Best wishes - John
T2 Dx Nov 2000 - then - HbA1c 5.7 - Chol 7.0 - BP 164/109
Metformin, Simvastatin, Rampiril, Bisoprolol
HbA1c - 9.4 > 7.2 > 6.7 > 8.5 > 6.8 > 5.7 > 5.5 > 5.3 > 5.1 > 5.0%
Chol - 5.3 > 4.2 > 3.1 > 3.7
BP now 105/60
