Spiral, if you ever do need any kefir grains, I will be happy to give you some, whatever you do, DON'T buy them on ebay or from anywhere else, there is no need to pay for them.
Oh I do hope that you feel better very soon.
All the best

Sorry I didn't pick up on this before, but I might not have known the answer then!

A few days ago, in one of the books I have been reading - Dr Lutz's Life Without Bread, I think, it mentioned that entering Ketosis can give you a funny taste in the mouth.

I had this some months back and didn't know what it was - I was a bit worried at the time, but after a week or so it went away. I was taking all sorts of supplements in case it was a shortage of something!

Apparently that can happen when you enter ketosis and again, it doesn't last very long as the body adapts to it. Now I know what it is I'm quite chuffed as at least i know that I was in ketosis at the time, even if I am not at the moment! I did have it before - possibly when I was very low carb a couple of years back - I didn't make a note and don't actually remember when, but I do know that I've had it before and quite likely when very low-carb. If it happens again I will have to take more notice next time.

So, it probably isn't the Metformin at all, but just may be an indication that you are, or were, in ketosis!
A qualified fool is still a fool.....

Down from 40 units per day to 10 units every 2-3 days......

Hi Ali

Re. the strange taste. Metformin is known for giving a metallic taste, but usually goes away after a few weeks. Low carbing can also produce a strange taste. Its acetone in the breath, some people say it can smell like pear drops.

I doubt I was in ketosis, Ali.

The taste has reduced a bit since I had the Met reduced, but it is still there. Most of the other symptoms persist and I'm probably going to go back to the doctor, I will consider this after my next period if things have not improved then. I have been on lactulose, which has improved things slightly, but I want to know why I'm feeling like this, medication isn't a long term solution.

I was actually thinking of seeing a homeopath, Hana. I'm going to see what happens after my next period. My cycle is sometimes erratic and then it sorts itself out.
