Flax

Postby Spiral » Sun Feb 14, 2010 2:53 pm

A great vegetarian source of omega 3. My cupboards contain eyewateringly expensive ground/milled flax and flax oil, and the considerably more cost effective flax seeds. I was occasionally adding flax oil to salad dressings, sprinkling the seeds on to salads, but I have not been consistent with this. I think I need to eat more flax.

My belief is that if you eat it uncooked it probaly has more of the active ingredient available. Am I right?

What I want to know is how many other ways are there to eat flax. To steal a well known commercial catchphrase, how do you eat yours? Please feel free to include the recipies :) or start a thread in the relevant section!

What benefits have you noticed since you started to consume more flax?

I like to dress my salads or coleslaw with 2:1 of Flax oil:lemon juice.

I also add freshly ground flaxseeds to my yogurt for breakfast, along with a few sunflower seeds and flaked almonds.

Always keep them in the fridge.

I enjoy flax porridge most of these winter mornings as it's tasty, simple to make, and wholly consistent with my low-carb regime.

It's very simple to make.

1/4 cup of flax seeds.
A tablespoon of double cream
Sweetener
Cinnamon
Hot Water

Grind the flax seeds for 5 or 6 seconds in a coffee grinder (don't overgrind or the meal becomes oily and doesn't taste as nice).
Mix milled flaxseed with 1/4 cup of boiling water.
Sprinkle sweetener and cinnamon to taste.
Stir in the double cream.

Ixworth

A great posting, I am beginning to think we should start buying shares in companies that grow and distribute Flax seeds. When the great unwashed catch on we will probably be paying double.
