Abbott

Postby Marmot » Fri Jun 18, 2010 3:16 pm

As I posted earlier somewhere I have been having trouble uploading stats, have two Abbott meters and neither were uploading properly, despite following advice given by Abbott. Phoned back today, IT perosn was at a loss as to why this should be so, but the upshot is that I am being sent two new meters, a pack of strips, new leads etc all free of charge, just to cover all bases. Now yes a cynical side of me says it is in their interest to keep me on side as I purchase a lot of strips from them, but they are always very helpful. The person I was talking to said they had heard that NO testing was being recommended for T2s   . I asked about strip prices, although strips are not cheap Abbott are cheapest I've found, I was told that their policy was to continue charging direct purchaser the same price that the NHS was charged.

Hi Janet I agree Abbot are one of the best, the mark up by other companies of about 50% above the price charged to the NHS is sheer profiteering, couple this with the profit they make at NHS prices and even with the research costs this makes for massive profits.

David Kliff, a financial analyst who specializes in the diabetes
marketplace, has estimated the cost of producing a test strip at 8 to
12 cents. If so, that means a strip that retails for $1 represents a
roughly 900% markup.

This comes as no surprise to me with cuts coming in the NHS budget what better target than us fat lazy sods who have brought this on ourselves, the fact 80% of obese people are not diabetics and 20% of us that have been diagnosed with a BMI in the normal range seems to have been overlooked.
