In praise of resistance bands

Postby hanadr » Sun May 24, 2009 11:41 am

Exercise is one of the keys to GOOD diabetes control. Many people don't exercise, because they can't afford the gym and think they need expensive equipment. For Cardio exercise, nothing is cheaper or more effective than a brisk walk of 30 minutes or so. Just make sure your shoes fit well.
For resistance and muscle building, most people would turn to weights. Bernstein recommends lifting weights. To have these at home is quite costly, although you can make a fair substitute with plastic milk containers. I find that anything heavy can be dropped( onto diabetic feet!) and I like resistance bands. These are strips of stretchy latex of differnt thicknesses, with which you can do all the same exercises as with weights. there's plenty about them on the web and they are cheap. Moreover, if you drop one, it doesn't injure you

I am a home exerciser and apart from occasional dog walking is the only regular exercise I get.

www.collagevideo.com sell exercise dvds and videos and ship to the UK. The good thing is that you can preview excerpts from the videos and see other user's opinions before you buy. Due to shipping I buy in bulk infrequently.

Hi All

I agree with Hana, walking is great exercise and costs nothing. I am lucky and live next to the sea and walk for an hour whenever possible. Whether you live on the coast or in a city, a pleasant and interesting walk is seldom far away. Get out there and walk, you know it makes sense, why fight it.

Keep the faith. Kind regards Mitch

When I was last in your area, "next to the sea" is probably now "several yards over the edge of the cliff" (the same thing happens with parts of the coast around here)

Mu body seems to respond best to Mark Sisson's concept of moving slowly a lot, moving very fast occasionally, lifting heavy things etc. rather than the current fetish for hard cardio which can seriously adjust my BG, and sometimes in both directions at once.

I like to do "lazy man's Tabata sprints" where I walk really fast, stop for a chat, walk really fast, stop to pet a dog . . .

So you're the chap who calls my Molly( Italian Greyhound ) "skinny" and laughs at her purple "all-in-one " outfit
Hana
otherwise, I've recently read that short intense burst, with gentler movement in between is the best, but you must keep moving
