Any T1 on Pump and low carbing?

Type 1? Think low carb doesn't apply to you? Think again! Our own Larsson has shown what can be done with a bit of knowledge and application! Although we like to think of us as one big happy family, there are some issues that are specific for type 1 diabetics, post any queries here and hopefully there'll be someone to help out!

Any T1 on Pump and low carbing?

Postby blackforestmama » Mon May 31, 2010 6:07 am

Hi there

I am relatively new to this forum.

I have t1 and been on a pump for 8 years now. I use Humalog for 11 years. I asked Dr if I can change insulin as I think the Humalog is making me gain weight.

Now being introduced to this low carbing, really been low carbing this weekend and noticed a huge difference I went from bolusing 5 to 6 units at each meal to 2 units at each meal. Wow huge difference and my number was so much more stable so no extra insulin needed to bring down my highs!

Want to learn more and to connect with other T1s and if possible those also on Pump and which insulin you use on the pump.

Thanks in advance.

BFM
You're describing what Bernstein calls his "doctrine of small numbers" although he isn't referring specifically to pumps. He writes that keepng carbs low means, low doses, fewer corrections and smaller doses for those corrections leading to fewer errors and hypos.
I believe Bernstein in these things although I don't use insulin myself. My T1 husband does and I'm sure he would have bettrer control if he dropped his numbers more. They are already low by "medical establishment" measures.

Hiya!
I'm a T1 for 5 years and about to start on the pump at the start of July - really looking forward to it!

Have been investigating lowcarb for a while, reading Dr Bernstein and getting my head round the idea of not having carbs (which i love!) but what he says all makes sense and I know it's the right way to go.

I also understand that once a low carb diet has been followed for a while, the craving for carbs disappears - find it hard to believe at the mo but am happy to be proved wrong!

Hope we can support each other a bit BFM

Hi Vanniebee

I have been low carbing since beginning of February and can honestly say that I have not had carb or sugar cravings at all. Because the food we can eat on this regime is incredibly tasty and satisfying there is no feelings of being deprived or hungry. If low bg numbers mean less medication that can only be a good thing as all medication has side effects. I am not diabetic but have managed to reduce my blood pressure medication and it is still lowering so hopefully it won't be long until I can stop taking it all together.

Just take a look at the recipes on the site and on Mitch's and the carbs will soon be long forgotten.

Welcome Vannieebee!!

Yay another T1...we are a rare species on here at the moment. :) And another pumper too!

For sure!

I am finding it really awesome..just starting my 3rd week now of low carbing. Wow...I reduced my bolus rate (meal time insulin on the pump) by 3/4 from 5 units a meal to 1 to 2 units a meal. I even had to reduce my morning basal rate as well which was sooo rare as I was a bit too low at wake up time.

I still been able to bike 10 km at a stretch without hypos. It makes a huge difference without those peak from the carbs! Less insulin!

I had contemplated if I should go off the pump but because I had severe hypo to begin with I am going to stay with the pump for now. (Dr. Bernstein listed a few cons of having a pump... but now I cant seem to go back without it just yet). ITs been good for being flexible too with a family life etc...

I love not "having" to eat just because of taking insulin. Low carbing helps so much more.

I havent had hunger pang...instead I am stuffed from all the protein and veggies! Its amazing! Really works. Now if I can get my kids to eat their veggies and protein and less carbs too that would be good! hee...

Hey blackforestmama,

I'm a type 1 and have been following a very low-carb diet for 2 years now. I've been pumping for just over a year using Novorapid and that combined with the diet has done wonders for my health. Any questions you might have, give me a shout.

Hi Katie

Welcome aboard. We don't have too many type 1's using a pump here, so it's good that you have joined, I'm sure you can teach us a lot. Have a look around the recipe and food sections I'm sure you will find it interesting.

All the best, Mitch
